Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a devout Christian who explicitly identifies his faith in Jesus Christ as the absolute center of his life and baseball career. The Toronto Blue Jays star first baseman has frequently stated in interviews that "Christ is everything to me" and that he places his identity in Jesus because baseball can disappear in a heartbeat, but faith is everlasting.
Guerrero routinely demonstrates and discusses his Christian faith through several core habits and public rituals:
- Writing "DIOS" in the Dirt: Before every single at-bat, Guerrero uses his bat to scratch the word "DIOS" (Spanish for "God") into the dirt near home plate. He started this ritual during his time in the minor leagues to stay grounded and show immediate gratitude.
- Daily Scripture and Prayer: His regular routine includes reading the Bible three times a day—when he wakes up, right before every game in the clubhouse, and right before going to bed. He also prays on his knees before games.
- Public Praise: Whether celebrating his historic 2021 All-Star Game MVP honors or leading his team into the postseason, Guerrero consistently uses his postgame media availability to credit God. He famously noted his mindset when praying for team success: "If it's something for us, I'm going to give You the glory. If not, I'm going to give You the glory no matter what."
- Social Media Testimony: His personal Instagram account prominently features the phrase "God first" in the bio, and he frequently shares Bible verses with his followers.
