Za’Darius Smith is a Christian who grew up in the church and has deep roots in his faith community. He publicly associates with Harrison Street Baptist Church, located in his home state of Alabama.
His Christian faith and family ties have heavily influenced his life and recent NFL career decisions:
- Family Tragedy & Sabbatical: Smith took an abrupt break from football to go home to Alabama to care for his mother, Sharon Smith, after learning she was terminally ill. Following her passing, he also lost his grandmother and father in a short span, relying heavily on his faith to navigate that emotional period.
- Honoring His Mother’s Wish: Upon returning to the NFL, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons, a move inspired by his mother's long-standing wish for him to play closer to home.
- Giving Back to His Congregation: To honor his mother and share his career milestones with his faith community, Smith recently arranged and funded a Greyhound bus to bring 45 members of his church congregation to Atlanta to watch his home opener.
