Asa Newsom, a linebacker for the Kansas State Wildcats, recently shared a detailed testimony about his Christian faith and how it anchors his life both on and off the football field. Featured on the Sports Spectrum "What's Up" podcast, he opened up about how his relationship with God has guided his college football journey and sustained him through severe physical setbacks.
The Roots of His Faith
Newsom grew up in Waverly, Iowa, where his parents laid a strong foundation for his spiritual life. Although they enrolled him and his brothers in a private Lutheran elementary school, his parents were intentional about telling them that religion shouldn't just be an inherited routine. Instead, they challenged him to explore and develop his own authentic, personal relationship with God.
High School Turning Point
His faith truly solidified during a pivotal moment in his senior year of high school. Newsom engaged in a deep conversation with a group of classmates that included an atheist, an individual practicing a different religion, and a peer from a separate branch of Christianity. Rather than shaking his beliefs, hearing these diverse viewpoints motivated him to dive deeper into his own convictions, ultimately doubling down on his commitment to Christ.
Overcoming Injury with Faith
After a highly promising start as a true freshman at Kansas State University, Newsom suffered a significant knee injury. Throughout his grueling rehabilitation process and his push to get back into the linebacker rotation, he has relied heavily on his faith. Newsom credits his spiritual foundation with helping him trust the process, remain humble as a "sponge" in the film room, and maintain a broader identity that isn't solely defined by his athletic performance.
