Dustin May's faith has become a defining pillar of his baseball career, especially following a series of grueling physical setbacks and a terrifying life-or-death health scare.

The Turning Point

While recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, May suffered a sudden, life-threatening esophageal tear simply from swallowing a piece of lettuce. Urged by his wife to seek immediate medical help, he underwent emergency surgery. Coming so close to losing his life—and his career—profoundly shifted his spiritual journey.

May has explicitly spoken about how these severe hardships forced him to re-evaluate his relationship with God, stating:
"My faith with the Lord has grown a lot over the past couple of years, just because I feel like I've had to put so much more on His plate, and He's delivered in every moment."

A Shifted Mindset on the Mound

His deepened faith radically altered his approach to professional baseball. Instead of carrying the heavy anxiety of performance, May adopted a philosophy he calls his "three-foot world"—focusing purely on the immediate environment of the next pitch, trusting God's larger plan, and playing with a profound sense of gratitude just to be alive and healthy. He credits this spiritual grounding for his ability to handle both poor outings and high-pressure moments without losing his peace.

World Series Platform

During the Milwaukee Brewers' historic run to win the 2026 World Series title, May was part of a highly vocal, faith-driven clubhouse culture. Alongside teammates like William Contreras and Garrett Mitchell, May routinely used his post-game platforms to redirect the glory to his faith, treating every opportunity to wear a major league jersey as a gift from God.
